Jess Porter Unplugged. Andy Ukhtomsky Inplugged

by pathwaysblogtk

Last week we were invited to review a singer/songwriter called Jess Porter at a weekly gig being run by students at RMIT University called “Chill & Grill”. At first glance Jess Porter is a solo guy with an acoustic guitar, though he is much more than this, he plays in Indie Folk band ‘Velma Grove’, ‘Lends his piano and guitar playing in a instrumental Jazz group called ‘Immerman 1.1’ while at the same time releases his own solo records at an impressive pace. The man has an impressive collection of songs at his disposal, and for this gig chose to play a collection from his last two solo releases.
Though he played only five songs in total, two from his latest release ‘Songs for awesome people’ and three from his 2011 record ‘The Surrealist”. One of the tools Jess uses effectively is his use of dynamics. He has the ability to bring the audience’s attention to the stage with a sudden drop in guitar playing and hook them in with just a brief amount of lyrics.
It was an honest performance from the singer & we look forward to watching him play with his other band Velma Grove the 24th of August.

Andy Ukhtomsky has been someone we have heard good things about from for a while now.
He is a resident DJ around Melbourne and produces his music at his home studio.
His live set is intriguing and accessible. Intriguing in that he does not over produce the sounds that he incorporates in his set. Accessible in that he enjoys keeping to a pop structure for his music while experimenting with different sounds to create journey that the listener can be taken on.
It was an exciting set of electronic music, it would good to see Andy perform in a club or a venue at night so his music would have continuity within his surroundings.
Andy is a regular at Brown Alley and Lounge Bar in the city.
